Franklin Housing Authority awarded grant from Tennessee Housing Development Agency
Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) recently awarded nearly $5 million in National Housing Trust Fund grants to help increase access to affordable housing throughout the state.
The Franklin Housing Authority received an $806,047 grant to be used for construction costs for new affordable housing on the Cherokee Place site. The site had 59 public housing units with those units set to be demolished in August. Construction is expected to begin in the fall.
"This grant from THDA will assist us in continuing to build new affordable housing in Franklin," said Derwin Jackson, president, and CEO of the Franklin Housing Authority. "As construction costs continue to rise, it becomes a challenge to find funding to meet those rising costs. Grants from THDA help us to fill the gap."
NHTF grants are awarded through a highly competitive application process open to Public Housing Authorities and nonprofit entities throughout Tennessee.
For over 65 years, the Franklin Housing Authority has provided affordable, safe housing for low- and moderate-income families in Franklin. FHA operates 72 public housing units, 224 Low Income Housing Tax Credit units, 126 Rental Assistance Demonstration Project-Based Voucher units, 24 non-subsidized affordable units, and administers 154 Section 8 vouchers serving nearly 500 families. FHA also supports partnerships with programs that foster economic self-sufficiency for residents.
